MSc - Submission Guidelines

Submission of Dissertation

MSc Submission Sheet Students must complete this document and submit to the office with their MSc Dissertation hard copies (pdf file)

Students will be notified of the dates the Board of Examiners will meet together with the deadline dates for submission. (The deadline date is approximately one month before the Board meet)

Students wishing to be considered at either of the two annual Board of Examiner’s meetings will need to submit the following to Tracy McKenna in the UNIGIS Office:

Students registered at the Manchester Metropolitan University : TWO unbound copies of their dissertation in the format specified below together with a digital copy either by email or on CD.

Students registered at the University of Salford : THREE unbound copies of their dissertation in the format specified below together with a digital copy either by email or on CD.

Submissions must be received by the deadline date to allow time for assessment. Your project will be assessed by two internal markers and the external examiner for the programme.

The UNIGIS office will bind your dissertation for you after the Board has made its decision. The cost of binding is currently £24.99 per copy. Students will be informed of the cost after the Board meet. A copy of your work will be returned to you, a copy is held by UNIGIS and the third copy is kept by the institution you are registered at for its records.

Summary of the guidelines you should follow for the layout of your thesis:

• The dissertation should be of 10,000 – 15,000 words in length.
• The dissertation should be typed, with double spacing, on white A4 size paper using one side of the paper only with margins of width at least 2.5cm. (US sized paper is acceptable)
• All pages should be numbered consecutively.
• Drawings, maps or other material may be submitted separately if desired. Large maps, etc. may be included in folded from in the back of the dissertation. All graphics must be permanent. Computer disks containing data sets or run time demonstrations may be included in appropriate pockets attached to the inside back cover – and readable by a standard PC specification.
• Candidates are required to submit two/three copies of their dissertation and, if accepted, one/two of these will be retained by the Universities.
• Candidates are required to submit a digital copy of their dissertation.
• Candidates are required to submit a formal submission sheet to accompany their project (available to download from the MSc web pages)
• A signed Disclaimer page should be included with each copy.
• The name of the candidate, title of the dissertation, MSc and the date of submission should appear on the front cover.
• After examination dissertations will be permanently bound in rigid boards with a black cover and one copy will be returned to the student.
• There will be a charge to cover the costs of binding carried out by the UNIGIS Office. This is currently about £23.99 per copy.

Submission Date 2009/2010

  • The Summer Board of Examiners will meet on 17th June, 2010 and the deadline date for submission is 1st May 2010
  • The Autumn Board of Examiners will meet on the 21st October, 2010 and the deadline date for submission is the 10th September, 2010.
