GIS Day 2009 celebrations in Bermuda
GIS Day cake UNIGIS UK MSc student Peter Hopkin, the Senior Land Surveyor at the Ministry of Works and Engineering, Bermuda was the key speaker at the Bermuda Government's Users' Conference held on GIS Day on November 18th and gave a talk on "An Introduction to Internet GIS" at which The Minister of Telecoms and E-Commerce for Bermuda was present. Celebrations were assisted by this delicious GIS Day cake. The cake's image illustrates the evolution of mapping in Bermuda since its colonization 400 years ago. The image includes the Bermuda Zoological Society's aerial photo mosaic, capturing the Bermuda islands and the reef platform.

Further cake photos and news of the events held on GIS Day can be found on the ESRI GIS Day website:

MSc Workshop 2009
The 2009 MSc Workshop took place on Saturday 17th September in Room E419, John Dalton Building, Manchester Metropolitan University. Students had presentations on the MSc programme and had the opportunity to meet the staff tutors.

Successful grant for James Cheng
James Cheng, UNIGIS UK staff member, and his team that is composed of six institutions across three countries (UK, Germany and China) have been successfully awarded a grant (totally 110,000 euro) by the European organisation CO-REACH. This pilot project will run for 18 months from 1st August 2009, with the title ‘Internal mobility and integration in China and the European Union’. James takes a leader in quantitative analysis and GIS applications, which aim to quantify and analyze the spatial and temporal patterns and processes of migration/immigration across the China and the EU. In this pilot project, GIS will be extensively applied for data collection (participatory GIS), data analysis (spatial statistics at global and local levels), spatial modelling (spatial interaction models and socio-spatial behaviour models) and public participation (PPGIS). By the end of this project, the team will submit a full proposal to apply for a bigger grant.

Spatial Analysis Workshop dates
The Spatial Analysis workshop for UNIGIS UK Stage 2 students will be held between May 5 - 8 2009. The tutors will be Graham Smith and James Cheng. The workshop will introduce a range of advanced spatial analysis techniques commonly used to investigate the nature and extent of spatial patterns within geographical phenomena. Particular focus is given to the theoretical concepts associated with the analysis of point and aggregated (areal) data, notably measures of spatial autocorrelation and spatial regression, and their application within the GIS toolbox. Both ArcGIS software and free and open source software will be used during the workshop. Participants will be provided with a set of notes in advance to allow some pre-workshop reading and preparation.

Prize winning UNIGIS UK student
Christopher NeedhamChristopher Needham, who graduated with an MSc in GIS from UNGIS UK in 2007, has been awarded third prize in the annual UNIGIS International Academic Excellence Award for his dissertation entitled: "Using GIS to Model the Diurnal Variation of Urban Population Distribution". Well done Chris!

In his dissertation, Chris developed a model that allows daily variation in small area populations within a city to be estimated, using Chester a case study. Although Chris developed his model as an academic exercise, such modelling should be of interest to local emergency planning agencies. Chris will present a paper based on his dissertation at the forthcoming GI_Forum conference in Salzburg.

The judges of the Excellence Award were impressed by the very high standard of the dissertations that were entered for this year's prize. The first prize went to Andre Coleman, from UNIGIS Amsterdam, for his dissertation: "An Adaptive Landscape Classification Procedure Using Geoinformatics and Artificial Neural Networks" [http://www.unigis.nl/downloads/msc/Andre%20Coleman.pdf] and the second prize was given to Tobias Fleischmann, from UNIGIS Salzburg for a dissertation called:"Webprocessing Service For Moving Objects Analysis" [http://www.unigis.ac.at/club/bibliothek/pdf/1249.pdf]

Congratulations to Andre, Tobias and Chris!

New UNIGIS Health Unit to be released
Dr Mark Creswell, in collaboration with UNIGIS Amsterdam colleagues, has now completed a new Unit, ‘Spatial Health in Practice’ to complement our existing ‘Spatial Analysis of Health’ Unit. The new Unit focuses upon the use of GI techniques in the context of health care delivery. An innovative feature of the Unit is its evaluation of RFID tagging to monitor the changing locations of patients and equipment within a hospital. From this very micro-scale application, the Unit then moves on to consider monitoring disease across Africa.

Having, now, two optional ‘Health GIS’ Units available will allow our students to specialize in this area of GI application. The new Unit will be offered to UNIGIS UK and UNIGIS Amsterdam students for the first time in March 2009.

Successful Conference
'Location: Exploiting the Benefits' was the theme for geographic information and surveying conference held in Malta on 5th December 2008. The event was jointly organised by the Malta Association for Geographic Information (MAGI), the Malta Institution of Surveyors (MIoS) and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors – Malta (RICS Malta).

This conference, which attracted over 100 delegates, was the premier geo-spatial event of 2008. Organised by the Maltese geo-community for the local geo-community, the conference attracted many stakeholders of the local industry, providing networking, knowledge-sharing and collaboration opportunities to engage and strengthen the surveying and GI industries in Malta. The keynote speech was given by Dr Vanessa Lawrence, Director General and CEO of Ordnance Survey GB. The conference followed with presentations from various Maltese and European speakers.

UNIGIS UK is proud to note that past students played key roles in the event. Carol Agius, MAGI Chair, was a lead member of the conference organisation team and gave the conference opening and closing address. Dr Saviour Formosa presented a paper entitled 'Investigating Crime: giving a Spatio-Temporal hand to social and landuse decision makers'. Nick Spiteri gave a presentation about ESRI Solutions for Location Based Services, while Carol Valentino was on the stand of one of the Gold Sponsors of the event.

UNIGIS UK was a Silver Sponsor of this conference.

UNIGIS presentation at ESRI Conference
In late October 2008 UNIGIS was invited to contribute to the Education Session at the ESRI Europe, Middle East and Africa User Conference, which was held at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in London.  Richard Armitage presented a paper looking at some of the issues relating to how GIS might be taught via distance learning, based on the experience gained by UNIGIS over the last 18 years.  A copy of Richard’s presentation is attached.  UNIGIS was also asked to contribute to a lively discussion at the end of the Education Session looking at whether there was a need for a Professional Accreditation for GIS.

This lecture is given by Professor A Stewart Fotheringham the Director of the National Centre for Geocomputation National University of Ireland Maynooth and hosted by CASA.

Human beings have long appreciated both the knowledge and power that come with knowing one's location.  Whereas in the past, such knowledge was in the hands of a privileged few, modern geotechnologies allow near-ubiquitous access to this information.  This seminar explores some of the ways we can now measure and observe the location of people and objects and then examines the uses, both good and bad, to which this information can be put.
