The references below are primarily to academic GIS sites, which provide substantial content for GIS students.

The AGI The UK's Association for Geographic Information has an excellent Web site, giving access to all kinds of on-line resources. These include the AGI dictionary of GIS terms, newsletters, a GIS bibliography, frequently asked questions list, details of conferences, and job vacancies information.
AGILE - EDUCATION The Working Group on Education of AGILE, the Association of Geographic Information Laboratories of Europe, has around 40 members. Everybody who is interested in the working group and who will actively participate is most welcome.
The site should become an information source for everyone interested in education in the field of GeoInformation, and is certainly not limited to members of the WG only: Everybody is welcome to view all the information on this site, registered members of the working group can add to and comment on (most of) the content.
British Isles GPS Archive Facility The facility is funded by NERC (Natural Environment Research Council) and operated by the IESSG at the University of Nottingham. The facility archives and delivers GPS data to scientists, from a soon to expand network of over 50 continuously recording GPS stations sited throughout the UK, including the Ordnance Survey active stations.

A wide and increasing range of science is being serviced by the archive, helping to reduce the costs of research by way of data acquisition and storage, with availability of some data sets reaching back as far as 1996.

Recent examples of research enabled through the archive include: wildlife tracking (foxes and red deer), vertical land movement, post-glacial rebound, weather forecasting (tropospheric water vapour content), space weather (ionospheric activity), ocean tide loading, georeferencing of remotely sensed imagery, and an archaeological 'dig'.

ESRI's Data Hound ESRI's Data Hound allows users to search for free data in ESRI format. This ESRI service catalogues and searches Web sites that offer freely downloadable data compatible with ESRI software.
Flowmap Flowmap is a software package dedicated to analyzing and displaying interaction or flow data, developed by the developed at the Faculty of Geographical Sciences of the Utrecht University in the Netherlands. You can obtain a free download from this site.
FreeGIS The FreeGIS Project provides:
* software overview on free Geographic Information Systems (this web site)
* communication on developments, plans, infos on free GIS software and free Geo-Data (mailing list)
* software and data prepared for direct use (CD)
The Geographer's Craft The Geographer's Craft site, University of Colorado. A full course on GIS and related issues. Not to be missed.
GIS Development The GIS portal. The main objective of the portal is information dissemination and knowledge sharing. www.GISdevelopment.net is in a constant process of integrating the content base of activities in the field of Geographic Information Sciences from all over the world and to make this information available to all.
The GIS Files The GIS files is an interactive learning zone introducing the basic concepts of GIS produced by the Ordnance Survey. Contains useful material on GIS plus case studies.
GIS Map Book Gallery ESRI's site with an excellent introduction to the field of GIS and a GIS map gallery of examples.
GITA

The Geospatial Information & Technology Association website contains a resource section with White Papers, including an interesting debate on 'What is GIS?':

[ What is GIS?]

Harold Reynolds GIS Tutorial. An Introduction To Geographical Information Systems (GIS) by Harold Reynolds.
Innovative GIS - The GIS Primer A commercial site providing an excellent education service with wide ranging coverage of GIS basics and issues.
LGISC GIS Primer The Louisiana Geographic Information Systems Council created this web site to introduce the concepts, strategies, and methods for local, state, and federal entities interested in the implementation, development, and support of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in their organization.
MapCruzin This site contains free resources that you can use to create free base maps, GIS viewers, image map based web map projects, and even mapservers
The NCGIA The NCGIA (National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis) is an independent research consortium whose primary mandate is to conduct basic research in geographic information science and its related technology. There are three sites in the consortium: University of California Santa Barbara, the State University of New York at Buffalo, and the University of Maine.
The OpenGIS Consortium The OpenGIS consortium (OGIS) is dedicated to the development of an open systems approach to geoprocessing - basically this means the freedom to exchange data between systems and allow users to use the analytical functions of one GIS with those of another. A bit like the way you can work with different programmes on the Windows Desk Top. OGIS is important because it is recommending a range of open data structures which should be supported by all GIS products. No more data conversion problems!
OpenSource GIS This effort represents an attempt to build a complete index of Open Source / Free GIS related software projects.
Spatial Odyssey The Spatial Odyssey site is one which will be referred to many times throughout the course which contains useful reference material. There is also a list of journals which contain GIS articles, and details of how to search these.
University Consortium University Consortium for Geographic Information Science - American collaborative venture of university and other research institutions.
USGS GIS Tutorial U.S. Geological Survey have produced a tutorial for beginners of GIS.
