Although ESRI is a major commercial
vendor, its Web site provides a considerable resource of free,
or limited period trial, software and data. The UNIGIS programme

HyperLens |
HyperLens is a radically new
tool for scientific image visualisation. The viewer will run
either as an Applet from a website, or as a standalone application.
Developer's and server's kits are also available. It needs
you to have a well implemented version of Java on your machine
which can be a pain to get right but the basic package is
free! |

Most of the major image processing
vendors provide free image viewers. Users who only need to
display data will not be disadvantaged by the limited functionality.
Viewers are available from EASI/PACE. |
| INPE SPRING |
INPE (Brazil) have produced
SPRING, a fully functional image processing and GIS package
that can be downloaded from the web. It is free and
the latest version (v3.0) is available for Windows95, NT and
UNIX platforms. SPRING was developed for training INPE
personnel and it looks very sophisticated and professional.

Intergraph/GeoMedia Free Materials |
In its role as a 'Friend of
UNIGIS', Intergraph has provided our students with free 52-week
licenses of the latest version of GeoMedia Professional. Free
licenses of GeoMedia Viewer are also available. GeoMedia Viewer
is an easy to use, GIS software application for desktop viewing

version can be downloaded as a 21 day free trial.
You can produce professional maps easily from existing

MicroImages TNTlite |
A free version of the TNTmips
image processing and GIS software. TNTlite version 6.80 allows
you to analyse hyperspectral images up to 614 by 512 pixels
with any number of spectral bands. It has however, been
disabled from exporting data to other software. TNTlite is
free to download from the site (currently over 300Mb depending
on your computer platform), or you can order it on CD-ROM
for costs of shipping and materials (2003 price: $50). Included
on the CD, is the current set of Tutorial and Application
booklets in PDF format for learning geospatial analysis. |

Multispec |
You can find some pointers
to image processing freeware at this NASA site (it also includes
free TM data). The main freeware that they point to
is Multispec, a Mac package developed by LARS at Purdue University.
PC users can download a slightly cut-down version. |
