UNIGIS Honourary Award
At the UNIGIS meeting held in Krakow in
2005, an honorary professorship was given to Dr. Jim Petch, who
played a crucial role in the establishment and growth of the UNIGIS
network and who is currently working as Head of Distributed Learning
(Teaching Learning and Assessment Office) of the University of
Manchester.

GIS Day is a grassroots event that formalizes the practice of
geographic information systems (GIS) users and vendors of opening
their doors to schools, businesses, and the general public to
showcase real-world applications of this important technology.
The event is principally sponsored by the National Geographic
Society, the Association of American Geographers, University Consortium
for Geographic Information Science, the United States Geological
Survey, The Library of Congress, Sun Microsystems, Hewlett–Packard,
and ESRI.

This is the largest GI focused conference and exhibition in the
UK and includes the highest quality papers and plenary sessions.
Industry sectors incorporated include transport, utilities, environment,
central government, local government, business, technology and
health. UNIGIS UK will be represented at the conference and the
exhibition at Stand 47 and will welcome visits from past, present
and potential students.

The theme of the 7th Africa GIS conference is "Beyond
talk: Geo-information working for Africa". With this
theme, the conference hopes to encourage contributions to the
conference emphasising what has been achieved through more effective
geo-information management and utilisation in Africa.

on Grid Middleware and Geospatial Standards for Earth System Science
Data

This workshop will review developments in the application of Grid
middleware and geospatial standards to interoperability for earth
systems science data. A focus will be on the specifications of
ISO TC211 and the Open Geospatial Consortium, and Grid technology
solutions investigated by partners to the Australia-UK collaboration,
AUKEGGS, and other UK-based researchers.
Day Three is a full-day workshop on the Geography Markup Language
(GML) to be given by GML co-editor, Simon Cox, of CSIRO Exploration
and Mining, Australia.

Scholten honour
On Friday April 29th, 2005, Henk Scholten,
CEO of Geodan and Course Leader of UNIGIS Amsterdam, received
a Royal Decoration from the acting mayor of the Dutch municipality
Drechterland, mrs. A.G.M. van de Vondervoort. This Royal Dutch
decoration, Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau, was conferred
on him for his significant contribution to geo-information, both
on a national and international level.
AGILE-
Education
On November 10, 2004, the new web site
for the AGILE Working Group on Education was made public.
The Working Group on Education of AGILE,
the Association of Geographic Information Laboratories of Europe,
has around 40 members. Everybody who is interested in the working
group and who will actively participate is most welcome.
The site should become an information source for everyone interested
in education in the field of GeoInformation, and is certainly
not limited to members of the WG only: Everybody is welcome to
view all the information on this site, registered members of the
working group can add to and comment on (most of) the content.

Education Symposium 2005

This event will include an Education Panel session, chaired by
Professor Michael Goodchild from the University of California,
Santa Barbara, and will include Ignacio Guerrero, Executive Vice
President, Intergraph Mapping and Geospatial Solutions Product
Center; international panelists from EAST and UNIGIS; along with
notable award winning academics Farrell Jones of CADGIS, Louisiana
State University and John Moore, Burlington County Institute.
The symposium will once again offer an education network session
to provide a forum for discussion and interaction among peers
while learning about the latest Intergraph Education Program offerings.
Presentations from around the world will include regional education
models in Mexico and the USA, information on NGA grant opportunities,
and innovative approaches to K-12 education.

The Association for Geographic Information Technical Special Interest
Group will be running its second seminar on 10th February in London
on the subject of introducing GI interoperability issues. In similar
fashion to previous events, it is intended to provide a broad
overview of business and technical issues from a technology-neutral
(and vendor-neutral) perspective. Leading speakers from the UK
and Europe have been invited to offer their experience.
