An important part of the Diploma course
is acquiring skill in using GIS software. All our units have
exercises and assignments, many of which require you to use
GIS software.
UNIGIS supports two core commercial GIS packages - ESRI's
ArcGIS
9 and Intergraph's GeoMedia
Pro 6 . These two systems give you the opportunity
to complete UNIGIS excercises and assignments using two leading
commercial GIS products. Educational copies of these two systems
are provided FREE to UNIGIS students. We gratefully acknowledge
the continuing support for our programme by ESRI and Intergraph.
Students who choose to take our Remote Sensing Unit will also
need access to Clark Lab's Andes
package, as this package provides the advanced image processing
functions that this Unit requires. UNIGIS students can purchase
IDRISI at a special educational discount.
Open Source programs are increasingly important in GIS and some of our exercises are based upon Open Source products. At present we use:
These packages are supplied with the relevant units.
In addition to Open Source tools, we also make use of free online mapping services, such as Google Maps and Open Layers, showing our students how to customise these services to the needs of themselves and their employees.
For the Database Theory unit, you will need
access to a database package which supports Structured Query
Language (SQL). The MySQL
database package is supplied with the Database Theory unit
and the exercises are written assuming MYSQL will be used.
The 'Databases for Enterprise GIS' uses the PostgresSQL , which is supplied with the Unit.
Additional software is supplied, as required,
as part of individual Units of study.
