Stephen Hoon

Dr Stephen Hoon is a reader n the Department of Environmental and Geographical Sciences, Manchester Metropolitan University.

His research interests include:

  • Carbon sequestration, respiration and water cycling in dryland  environments, remote sensing of dryland environments, environmental instrumentation, environmental modelling and prediction
  • ESR/FMR & high sensitivity susceptibility studies applied to rock magnetism and diagenic environmental processes, climatic reconstruction, environmental magnetism, air quality and atmospheric particulates.
    High Frequency (FMR) properties, Magnetic Force Microscopy. GMR
    Soft Magnetic Materials, Fine Particle Magnetism, Magnetic Colloids, Magnetic Fluids, Particulates, Nanostructures, Thin Film / Multilayers and Magnetic Recording Media.
  • Instrumentation for magnetic measurements (design and theory):
    Vibrating Sample, Torque, Scanning Column, AGFM and Squid Magnetometry. AC Susceptibility, RF and FMR travelling wave absorption spectroscopy, Magnetic Force Microscopy, A.C. Susceptibility, Micro-Resonant Torque Magnetometry
    Environmental Magnetism, Rock Magnetism,
    Materials preparation by sputtering, evaporation and electrodeposition.
